Ram Nath Kovind (born 1 October 1945) is the 14th President of India elected on 20th July 2017. He was the Governor of Bihar from 2015 to 2017. He had also served as the Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha from 1994 to 2006.
The President is indirectly elected: they are selected by members of the Parliament of India (both houses) and the Legislative Assemblies of each of India’s states and territories, who themselves are all directly elected. The office-holder serves for a term of five years; there are no term limits. The oath of the President is taken in the presence of the Chief Justice of India, and in his/her absence, by the most senior judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Although the Article 53 of the Constitution of India states that the President can exercise his powers directly or by subordinate authority,with few exceptions, all of the executive authority vested in the President are, in practice, exercised by the Prime Minister with the help of the Council of Ministers.
